Initially studying Interior Architecture, Kaman's journey took a transformative turn after a leg injury introduced her to the field of Occupational Therapy. Now, Kaman is deeply committed to creating inclusive and accessible environments, empowering individuals to lead more fulfilling lives through her work. Her experiences at TIS helped shape her core values of creativity, empathy, and problem-solving, qualities she carries into her professional practice every day. This year, she was honoured with the TIS Alumni Award, recognising her significant contributions to society and her dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of others.
Can you share your journey from studying Interior Architecture to becoming an Occupational Therapist? What motivated you to make that transition?
While studying Interior Architecture, I sustained a leg injury from dancing that temporarily left me using a wheelchair. Navigating the environment with limited mobility gave me a first-hand understanding of the challenges faced by people with disabilities. I quickly realised how many everyday spaces are not designed to be truly accessible — even small details, like whether a door slides or pulls, made a significant difference to my independence.
During that time, I also became acquainted with several Occupational Therapists who introduced me to the field of home modifications, a specialty that directly intersects with interior design. This exposure led me to question why aesthetics and accessibility are often treated as separate priorities. I became deeply interested in the idea of creating environments that are not only visually appealing but also inclusive and functional for everyone.
What made you and your family choose TIS for your schooling?
My family chose TIS for my education because they were drawn to the school’s strong values, supportive environment, and teaching methods. They felt that TIS would provide a solid academic foundation and help shape my character and creativity, which they knew were important for my future. The emphasis on holistic learning and a nurturing community really aligned with what my family believes in.
Do you feel like the TIS environment inspired you?
Absolutely. The values and teaching approaches of the TIS staff greatly shaped how I see and approach the world. They encouraged open-mindedness, creativity, and critical thinking, fostering my personal growth beyond academics. Additionally, learning alongside people from diverse cultures taught me to be respectful and curious about different perspectives. This openness is invaluable in both interior design and occupational therapy, where understanding clients’ unique needs and cultural values is crucial. TIS helped me become more adaptable and globally aware, qualities that I carry into my professional practice every day.
What are some of your favourite memories from your time at TIS?
Some of my favourite memories from my time at TIS are definitely the Experience Weeks. Travelling with my classmates to different places was not only fun but also a great bonding experience, we learned a great deal outside the classroom and got to explore new cultures together. Another highlight for me was participating in the benefit concerts. A few of us girls would rehearse dance routines for weeks, and then perform on stage. It was always such a rewarding feeling to be part of something meaningful while doing what we love.
How did your experiences at TIS help prepare you for university and life after high school?
Academically, the school encouraged independent thinking and problem-solving, making my transition to university-level work much smoother. More importantly, TIS taught me how to collaborate, manage my time, and step out of my comfort zone. The supportive environment helped me build confidence in my abilities, which is just as critical as academic preparation.
Looking back, I believe that TIS nurtured a balance of creativity, empathy, and critical thinking, which contributed to my success in both interior design and occupational therapy. The school encouraged us to think outside the box, fuelling my passion for design, while its emphasis on community and understanding different perspectives helped build the empathy and communication skills essential in occupational therapy.
TIS didn’t just teach academic content, but it shaped how I approach people, challenges, and the world around me.
What were some of the key skills you developed during your time as an interior designer that you now apply in occupational therapy?
For one, creativity and problem-solving were vital. Designing spaces that work well for people’s needs taught me how to think outside the box and come up with practical solutions. Attention to detail is another important skill, as both fields require noticing small things that can make a big difference. Communication and collaboration are also key in design projects, as they are just as essential when working with clients as with healthcare teams in occupational therapy. Overall, my background in design has given me a unique perspective and toolkit that really enhances how I support people in their daily lives.
In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of creating accessible and comfortable environments for clients?
I believe the key aspect of creating accessible and comfortable environments lies in truly understanding their unique needs and experiences. It’s not just about following guidelines or checklists, it’s about actively listening and involving them in the process, so that the space can accommodate their lifestyle and challenges. Comfort and accessibility go hand in hand with dignity and independence, so the goal is to create environments that empower clients to live as fully and comfortably as possible.
What has been your most rewarding moment as an Occupational Therapist so far?
One of the most rewarding moments for me is seeing a client regain their independence in daily activities. It’s amazing to watch their confidence and abilities grow through small but meaningful changes. Knowing that I played a part in improving their quality of life reminds me why I love this work, it’s about making a real, positive difference for people every day.
Congratulations on winning the Alumni Award this year! What does this recognition mean to you?
Winning the award really reminds me of where I’m from and the journey I’ve taken. It makes me appreciate my roots and how much TIS has shaped who I am today.
What makes you proud to be a TIS alumni?
I’m proud to be a TIS alumnus because the school gave me a strong foundation, not just academically, but also in values like kindness, curiosity, and resilience. Being part of such a diverse and supportive community helped me grow into the person I am today, and that’s something I’ll always carry with me.
